[ 07 June 2010, Ulaanbaatar]
With only 5 years left until the 2015 deadline to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the Women Deliver Conference- scheduled for 7-9 June, 2010 in Washington- will call upon world leaders to increase investments in women. MDG 5, to Improve Maternal Health, is lacking most behind of all health MDGs and only if the world invests in maternal and reproductive health, poverty can be ended. A delegation of three key persons will represent Mongolia in this important summit that will draw attention to the importance of maternal health as a human right and a necessity for every nation’s sustainable development.
Dr. Tsolmon, J. Vice Minister of Health, will be one of the delegates from Mongolia: 'The global Women Deliver conference will be crucial in keeping maternal and reproductive health on the agenda and Mongolia's participation shows that the issue is one of our priorities. With only 5 years to go until 2015 we need to make the right choices for improving maternal and reproductive health.’
The core message of the conference will be that maternal deaths are preventable and cost effective solutions are available. There is a global consensus that investing in family planning, skilled birth attendance and safe abortions are successful solutions to improve maternal health. We need to focus attention to young people, improving health systems and human rights. The conference is important to create political will and financial support for reducing maternal mortality and providing universal access to reproductive health care.
In the Minister's Forum that will be attended by more than 30 Ministers from all over the world, strategies to overcome barriers in achieving MDG 5 will be discussed and national policies and programmes will be reviewed. Dr. Tsolmon, J. is looking forward to present the progress that Mongolia has made to improve maternal and reproductive health and will bring back the lessons learned from other countries to Mongolia.
Ms. Oyunkhorol, D, Member of Parliament and mr. Banzraghs, S. Advisor to the Parliament Speaker will participate in the Parliamentarian’s Forum during the conference. This platform aims to enable a productive dialogue on the successes, challenges, and obstacles in advancing MDG 5 and Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights and delivering solutions for their advancement on a global scale.
