The PTRC of the School of Economics, National University of Mongolia was established in 1990 with technical and financial assistance of UNFPA. Over the past 20 years, many achievements have been made and the PTRC has played a major role in teaching demography at university level, building capacity of senior managers and national researchers and conducting research in priority areas of population and development. Since 1992 over 220 students have graduated as demographers. Graduates of the center hold reputable positions in government bodies, international organizations and companies. One of them is Ms. S. Navchaa, UNFPA Assistant Representative in Mongolia.
Professor Mr. Tumurochir, President of Mongolian National University highlights the ongoing support to the Center: “PTRC has been supported by UNFPA Mongolia from the very beginning and its founding and organizational development is certainly one of the successes of implementation of the UNFPA activities in Mongolia”. Under the first comprehensive Country Programme (1992-1996), the center was institutionally strengthened and soon the PTRC started to promote the use of disaggregated population data for policy development. Strengthening the training and research capacity remained the focus area of the cooperation between UNFPA and PTRC throughout the years. The PTRC has been expanding its activities to do research in priority areas such as migration, reproductive health, youth and gender.
At the initiative of Mr. R.N. Pandey, UNFPA Technical Consultant and the Mongolian Population Association, the first Mongolian population journal was published in September 1996 under the leadership of the PTRC. This magazine features important articles on population and development and is still published twice every year.
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the PTRC, it is important to recognize their valuable contribution to building national training capacity on population, development and gender issues in Mongolia. Congratulations to all lecturers, researchers, staff, graduates of all batches, students and partner organizations and individuals!
